Chapter 3: Compounds from GOB Chemistry by Zoval
Educational Goals
StudyWork = Study + Homework
To perform well on any quiz or test about Atoms, I must:
- Understand where electrons are located in atoms and how the locations of electrons affect the energy of the atom.
- Define the term valence electron and draw the electron dot structure of an atom or ion.
- Define the term ion and explain how the electron dot structure of a s- or p-block element can be used to predict the charge of the monoatomic ion.
- Given the symbol, be able to name monoatomic cations and anions (and vice versa).
- Explain the difference between an ionic bond and a covalent bond.
- Understand the structural difference between ionic and covalent compounds.
- Given the name, be able to write the formulas of ionic compounds and binary covalent compounds (and vice versa).
- Define the terms molar mass, formula mass, and molecular mass and use these values in unit conversions involving moles and mass.
- Given the formula, draw the line bond structures of diatomic molecules.
